How to Avoid Delays: Working with A 3PL
Third Party Logistics (3PL) is a model that simply means that a third party is involved in a company's operations. If your supply chain becomes too complex to manage internally and you need to outsource some of your operations, a 3PL is what you’re looking for. Think of it like an intermediary or manager.
Most 3PLs offer a variety of logistics services such as inventory management, warehousing, packaging, and order fulfillment. Some 3PLs can also facilitate the movement of finished products to customers, retailers or distributors.
There are several variables to consider when working with a 3PL:
Consider Location
You’ll want to pick a 3PL that is convenient and centrally located to where your products are being packed out and shipped to their final destinations. This will save you time and money throughout the process.
Determine Requirements & Limitations
A 3PL is an outsourced service provider, which means there is an inherent lack of direct oversight and control. Therefore, it’s important to have a full understanding of what your 3PL requires from you, as well as clearly outlining what you expect from them. Remember: you’re the customer! Choose a 3PL that accommodates your needs and works well with your team.
Get Setup with your 3PL
Most 3PLs require account setup prior to receiving and processing your materials. Having your account fully setup as early as you can allows plenty of time to navigate their requirements, connect them with your suppliers and ensure that there won’t be hiccups once materials are inbound.
Connect Everyone!
Adding layers to your fulfillment process means that more connections need to be made. Your packaging provider will need contact information, as well as the receiving requirements of your 3PL. For example, if they require a delivery appointment. Other suppliers or links in your chain may need additional information, so be sure to make those connections early on.
It’s important to the team here at Givr that your expectations are met and that our expectations are clear, every step of the process. The same goes for working with a Third Party Logistics provider. Remember that you are the customer here. Look for a 3PL that works with you and for you.
